How Hunters Got Their Powers (The Awakening)
The fundamental explanation given in the beginning of Solo Leveling is:
1. The Gates Appeared: About ten years before the main story, mysterious portals called "Gates" started opening up all over the world. These Gates lead to dimensions filled with dangerous Magic Beasts.
2. The Influx of Mana: The appearance of the Gates brought an influx of mana (magical energy) into the human world.
3. The Awakening: Simultaneously with the Gates opening, some ordinary humans suddenly "Awakened"—gaining the ability to manipulate this mana and manifest supernatural powers. These awakened individuals are called Hunters.
4. Fixed Power: Once a person Awakens, their power level and abilities are generally fixed for life. This power is measured and they are assigned a rank, from the weak E-Rank (like the protagonist, Sung Jinwoo) up to the elite S-Rank. This is why Jinwoo is known as "The Weakest Hunter of All Mankind"—he awakened with a very low, static amount of power.
What Happened in Episode 1
Episode 1 primarily serves to introduce the world and Sung Jinwoo's desperate situation as an E-Rank Hunter.
The World is Revealed: The episode shows the reality of the world: Gates are a constant threat, and Hunters are humanity's only defense against the Magic Beasts that come out of them.
The Dungeon Raid: Jinwoo joins a low-rank (E-Rank) dungeon raid with a small team, including the Healer Joohee and the Veteran Song Chi-Yul. This demonstrates how Hunters operate to clear the dungeons and prevent a "Dungeon Break" (when the monsters spill out into the real world).
The Double Dungeon Incident: After successfully clearing the main chamber, the group discovers a hidden, second entrance—a Double Dungeon. Despite the immediate danger, they decide to enter.
The Catastrophe: Inside the Double Dungeon, they find a giant chamber with massive statues, including one that appears to be a god. It is revealed that this is a secret dungeon with a specific set of rules. When the statues start attacking, most of the group panics and is immediately killed.
Jinwoo's Choice: Jinwoo, Song Chi-Yul, and Joohee are the only ones left. Jinwoo realizes the statues are responding to the rules inscribed on the stone tablet. He makes a heroic, selfless choice to sacrifice himself to buy the others time to complete the "commandments" of the dungeon.
The "System" Appears: As Jinwoo faces certain death, an interface only he can see appears before him, asking if he accepts a "Player" contract. He accepts, and that is where the episode ends, setting the stage for his unique power to "Level Up."
In short, the beginning establishes the Hunters' magical origins, and then Episode 1 is about the devastating event that gives the protagonist, Sung Jinwoo, a unique power that breaks the fundamental rule of the Hunter world.
