Stress Management - What to do?

Stress is a feeling of pressure from the view of psychologists. It can cause psychological or physical pain. Little stress may be beneficial, even healthy as positive stress improves athletic or academic performance. It also creates motivation, adaptation, and reaction to the environment. But excessive amount of stress may cause mental or physical harm. It can increase the risk of stroke, heart attack, and mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety, insomnia, hypertension, irritation, anger disorder etc.

Genres of Stress:

There can be three types of stress:

1.The stress that is generated from the loss of a loved one, job, wealth;

2.The stress that is formed due to having impossibly high level of aspiration;

3.The stress that is related to an individual's status, power, health, security.

Time -Period

Almost everyone of us go through these kinds of stresses at various stages of our lives. During the early life, a child has to cope up with the family people and demands of school. At the time of later adolescence, boy-girl relationship problems are faced. After completing university or in some cases of early marriage, problems of the first year of marriage causes stress. Academic stress of college and university years and career choice, getting a job and entering into professional life cause more stress. These can be quite serious at times and can lead to early divorce. The pros and cons of having children and taking care of them bear heavily on women, while men usually have more career stress.

Every individual has a personal way of reacting to the problems they are facing; drug addiction, anxiety, obsession, anger, sleeplessness, compulsive disorder etc. are seen. Even ulcers are a symptom that can be developed at any age, among children too.

"I wish...I wish I were dead..."

"And what use would that be to anyone?"

- J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Kids need to be pampered moderately, not too much neither too less. In some cases, parents need to be a bit strict, on the other hand, they need to show love and affection towards them being friendly at the same time. Being too strict can lead a child towards destruction. Children need the opportunity to confront various problems at an early age when they are gradually learning to cope with them. If parents intervene prematurely, it might prevent the child from developing tolerance for problems or achieving problem solving techniques and patience.

What to do?

If a family member is under stress that he or she may not be aware of but other members can see, then he or she should not be taken to a psychiatrist immediately. Rather getting a good medical examination is always a standard procedure. It will give the patient an opportunity to express his or her feelings, inner worries. The doctor often gives some general words of advice for implementation by the patient him/herself or through the help from friends, family or other people. Only in the cases of extreme difficulty where the patient is unwilling to respond should get psychiatric treatment or attention. We should never forget that mental stress is a sensitive issue. So such patients should be dealt with love, patience and affection. It is high time that this matter should be discussed publicly rather being ignored.
